Carotene

 

 

Carotene can be used to synthesize several related hydrocarbons which can be synthesized by plants but not by animals. It is an orange photosynthetic pigment, which is important for photosynthesis. Carotene is also responsible for synthesizing the orange color in dry foliage, but not for all the yellow colors.
